a photojournal: weekly observation&experimentation. trying to figure out how to break the 'rules' of photography. meanings are important to me. i believe that cheap cameras can create beautiful pictures as well as the expensive ones. I use a Lomo LC-A and the Nikon Coolpix P300 camera. currently, Nikon FM-10 is on loan to me. i like to spend time alone in the darkroom working on my pictures. I THINK A LOT! i find it hard to express myself in speech so photography and writing is my kind of medium.

What Is To Be Desired?
Self-respect: To be part of the solution, not part of the problem
Love: To love the human beings that mean the most to me, and contribute to their lives if I can
Peace of Mind: To avoid mistakes that make me regret the past or fear the future
Involvement: Always to be tremendously interested
Understanding: To incorporate the things, people and ideas that happen to me into a coherent concept of the world
Freedom: To work at what interests me most, with minimum expenditure of time and energy on non-essentials
A Munich Welcome - Elizabeth Wang Lee
Street photography is what I am working on now. Stumbled upon her work on the FB page of photographer Eric Kim. I liek the unique perspectives showing the interaction between people and their environment. The picture below is one of my favorite:

In addition, I really appreciate the way she constructed her image. She composed her image such that the shadows are coherent with the ‘lights’ and subject in the photo, enforcing interactivity. Here’s an example of how she made good use of shadows to create the ‘inner’ life of the city:

I realized that I prefer to take pictures with people in it. I deeply admire the human race for its ingenuity, devotion, passion and love. I was talking to my best friend the other day and we realized we have another thing in common: We are avid people-watcher. That is to say, we enjoy sitting with a cup of coffee and read a book; Looking up every now and then to observe (sometimes even to the point of scrutinize) the people around us. It’s like my best entertainment?!
Recently, I read a book by Susan Cain titled “Quiet - The Power of Introverts in a world that can’t stop talking. Being an introvert as well as a photographer gave me an edge over others. I often reflect and ponder about the meanings that I one to create in my image. The result is that it’s easy for me to express in words the essence that I want to capture in an image. Being an introvert doesn’t necessarily means being shy and I am not a shy person, which enabled me to fearlessly (most of the times) talk to strangers that I am genuinely interested in to cast them as my subject. I am always keen to know them as a person, their stories, their struggles, passions and pride. It gives meanings to my work and this is of the utmost importance to me - I dislike taking photos for the sake of selfish intents (occasionally, I fall into this trip unknowingly but I am trying to be disciplined)
Sometimes, I reflect excessively.
I have to think less, act more. If not, my brain will probably explode due to the overwhelming volume of ideas it’s processing. I am not joking.

Intriguing.
I just approached a group of old men in Starbucks and asked if they can be my subjects for my photographic essay. Before, I was so reluctant to approach them but then i looked up the skies and prayed. As i looked down, I saw the recruitment sign with the word ‘Opportunity’ in bold. I think to myself: I should not let go of this opportunity! So there i go!
They are a group of ex-classmates from Oak Bay High, class of ‘43. They gather every last Thursday, 11am at Starbucks Cadboro Bay. This is so cool. Besties, we should do that when we are old too.
This concluded my FIRST OFFICIAL TIME approaching people for a photography projects. This is such a great start, that I approached 2 more persons on the same day. Ummm…I shall keep mum about the project for now. A clue: It’s about a place that I love to dwell in, conceptualized based on my favorite song from the movie “The Sound of Music”.
ciao.
Spring is the best time to take a walk around Finnerty Garden and discover the gifts of God - gloriously beautiful flowers + buds.
